Principles of Typeface Design: Sketch to Vector

Ready to design a font but not sure where to start or already underway but aiming for better?

For designers and type enthusiasts keen to delve into typeface creation, this course will enhance your understanding of letterforms, typefaces, and the significance of hands-on work. Learn to transform ideas into sketches, evaluate iterations, and transition from analog to digital, creating new type systems along the way.

Depending on your experience and your time commitment, students can develop a whole beautiful digital font with U&lc, figures, punctuation and more!

Homework will be given each week to advance your project. Class participation is encouraged to ensure your project is progressing. Additional feedback will be provided via Slack outside of the class.

What you’ll learn to do:

  • Establish an efficient and productive typeface design workflow
  • Learn basics of type design
  • Learn to sketch and iterate
  • Learn how to design and space type
  • Learn how to plan a type family
  • Learn how to design a basic Latin character set
  • Learn how to use digital font drawing software
  • Learn to draw for interpolation and produce variable fonts
  • Learn how to proof and test typeface
  • Develop your eye to critically observe color, spacing, rhythm and contrast

Required Materials

  • Mac computer (laptop or desktop)
  • Reliable Internet connection
  • A free Zoom account
  • A free Slack account (an invitation will be sent to you)
  • Adobe InDesign to test fonts
  • Optionally/recommended: Adobe Illustrator 2019+ to work with variable fonts
  • Sketching tools such as a variety of black markers, pencils
  • Eraser, white-out/correction fluid or pen, scissors, tape (artist tape or removable tape recommended)
  • White non-bleeding sketch paper
  • Optional: a tablet or iPad with drawing app like Procreate
  • Robofont, a free temporary educational license will be issued to each student enrolled
  • Access to a B&W laser printer for proofing (1200 dpi recommended)

This class will be meeting online using Zoom and sharing resources using a Slack group. Class meets once a week for 10 weeks.

Zrinka pp
Zrinka is a Croatian type and graphic designer currently based in Mexico. She holds a Masters degree in Typeface Design from TypeMedia Programme at KABK, Netherlands, and is a graduate of Type@Cooper’s Condensed Program in New York. She also holds a Masters degree from Art Academy of Split Croatia in New Media Design and a Baccalaureus Degree in Visual Communication Design. Having previously worked as a UX/UI and Visual designer for a decade, her work focuses mainly on blending type, digital media and printing techniques. Currently she runs DualType studio with Gen Ramirez.
