The selection of a brand typeface has become an integral part of any identity redesign. Many companies are now commissioning custom typefaces in order to ensure that their primary brand fonts are ‘ownable,’ both in sense of being visually distinct as well as proprietary to the company. In this talk at Type@Cooper West, MCKL founder Jeremy Mickel will discuss the current field of custom type design and share recent commissions of his own.
Jeremy Mickel runs MCKL, a Los Angeles-based type foundry that publishes original fonts and partners with design studios and companies to produce custom typefaces and logos. Clients include adidas, American Institute of Architects, Collins, Etsy, Pentagram, Target, Turner Duckworth, and others. His work has been honored by the Type Directors Club and AIGA, and his font Router was included in the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s “Graphic Design: Now In Production” show.
