Ease Into Script Lettering
with
Ying Chang
Everyone loves script letterforms, but those curves and loops can seem so unreachable and intimidating! This course is designed to give newcomers a solid kickstart in script lettering as well as to serve those who already draw in script an opportunity to sharpen their knowledge, strengthen their foundation, and further their practice.
By taking the script letterforms apart and studying the system, the participants will gain the ability to construct their own lettering pieces with consistency and rhythm. We will start with an introductory lecture on type and hand-lettering, followed by the breakdowns and variables in script letterforms.
With structural demonstrations, students will learn how to draw script letters, explore different styles in script, and receive personal feedback on their works. At the end of the workshop, all attendees will have a solid understanding of the foundational aspects of script lettering and continue to draw with confidence.
About Ying Chang
Ying Chang is a Taiwanese letterer and designer currently without a permanent address after 15 years of calling New York home. Her passion for letters was realized and nurtured through an unexpectedly eye-opening calligraphy workshop, which led her to the Type@Cooper program in 2014. Drawing letters feels natural to her, and the constant attempt to achieve tranquility between each stroke, space, and composition as a whole drowns out the chaos of the world. Guided by her ever-evolving philosophical realizations, Ying's work is characterized by a pursuit of equanimity and adaptability both on and off the page. Her background in graphic design, art direction, a decade well spent in the advertising industry, and a life on the road all influence how and what she creates. Ying's work in lettering and advertising can be seen across various brands, campaigns, publications, and recognitions. She aims to capture and share the essence of tranquility, mirroring the harmony she seeks in her life. In all she does, Ying aspires to be the person her 6-year-old self would want to grow up to be—while having all the fun along the way.
