with

Mon., Mar. 17 – Mon., Apr. 14, 2014
6:30PM – 9:30PM
Letter drawing techniques and design approaches for twenty-first century letterforms will be demonstrated & practiced. Each participant will do a piece of lettering consisting of a few drawn letters that will be used to make polymer plates. These pieces will be printed letterpress on the last day of class. No experience in letterpress printing will be necessary.

Modern letterforms pioneered by the Romain du Roi and promulgated by Giambattista Bodoni and the Didots make up an important part of contemporary typography. The course will include each participant drawing Modern letterforms in analogue and/or digital form, then printing them by letterpress from polymer plates in the Cooper Union Letterpress Studio. Lectures will be given on the origin of the Modern letter in the writing manuals of the 16th and 17th centuries, the weighting systems of pointed pen writing reproduced by copperplate engraving, and geometric construction. Nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century examples of Bodoni, Didot, Walbaum, Fat Faces, Century, Bell, Bulmer, and others will be perused and analyzed.
