with Nick Sherman

Tue., Oct. 13 – Tue., Nov. 24, 2015
6:30PM – 9:30PM
location: Type Directors Club

This 7 week class will begin with the basics of design using modern HTML & CSS and move on to cover fundamentals of responsive layout, digital typography, web standards, and efficient adaptation for a wide range of devices and screen sizes. Participants will learn about detailed typographic issues like font hinting and rendering as well as general design concepts like fluid page layout, typeface pairing, and how to avoid boring web design when working under tight constraints. Other practical topics such as font licensing, browser optimization, and software for web development will be covered.

Catch up on the basics of contemporary web design by building your own small-scale web project from scratch, focusing on responsive design and typography as implemented with modern HTML & CSS

Previous experience with HTML & CSS is helpful but not required. Participants should bring their own laptops to class.

    This course is intended for

  • Print designers who want to complement their existing skills with more web design experience.
  • Web designers who are used to making fixed comps of websites but want to design more directly with HTML & CSS
  • Web designers and developers who already work with HTML & CSS but want to improve their knowledge of responsive design or typography
  • Type designers who want a better understanding of how their fonts can be used on the web
  • DIY publishers who want to be more self-sufficient at publishing small webzines that look good but also function well

Over several weeks, participants will produce a web-based project which may be presented on a group website at the end of the course. Emphasis will be placed on producing web pages that look and function just as nicely on small mobile devices as they do on large desktop displays (and everything in between). Upon completion, students will have a basic working knowledge of responsive design and typography, with the ability to produce small websites or browser-native comps as part of a larger web development workflow.
