In this intensive 2 day workshop, students will learn from the ground up how to sketch letters, make refinements, and produce a finished analog or digital piece. Standard drawing tools will be used to test ideas and push various parameters, though no art or design background is required. This course covers the fundamentals for whichever styles students care to pursue, as well as techniques for harmonious compositions, and eye-catching effects.



    Required Materials

  • pens (microns, sharpies, broad nibs, brush pens—bring whatever you have)
  • pencils
  • erasers
  • white out
  • marker or tracing paper (preferable marker paper)
  • tape
  • scissors
  • Optional: a laptop running Adobe Illustrator, Glyphs or RoboFont

Introduction to Hand Lettering
After graduating from California College of the Arts, James received a masters from the TypeMedia program at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands. James lives in San Francisco, and runs OH no Type Company, an independent foundry focussed on display faces and expressive lettering.
