Eclectic Inspiration, Hand Lettering

with Carl Rohrs

Sat., Jun. 28 – Sun., Jun. 29, 2014
10:00AM – 5:00PM
location: On campus

This 2 day workshop, taught by Santa Cruz, California based veteran sign painter-calligrapher Carl Rohrs (whose influences come from all corners of the letter-universe and whose work crosses disciplines, styles and mediums) will be about mixing and using techniques from different media and inspiration from surprising sources.

Through a barrage of images taken from the wonderland of traditional and eccentric lettering from throughout the history of the Latin alphabet, you will be introduced to new avenues for your own exploration. From Griffo to Griffin, Knox to Neugebauer, Catich to Killian, Menhart to Mouse, Spurius Ruga to Rudo Speman, Herriman to Hoyer to Heinrichson, your connections to the surprising innovators of the ancient and recent past will be strengthened, and bridges to the past and your own wild future will be built by the hands-on experience in lettering and modern calligraphy techniques with flat pens and chisel-edge & pointed brushes.
