location: Rose Auditorium
November 2013 is the 200th anniversary of the death of Giambattista Bodoni. While Parma celebrates its hero with exhibits all over the city, it seems fitting that we celebrate him here in New York with a tribute to his life. Valerie Lester will take us on a tour of the cities in which he lived and will introduce you to the important people in his life: his grandfather; the superintendent of the Propaganda Fide press; the duke and duchess of Parma; prime minister Guillaume Du Tillot; Nicolás De Azara (the Spanish ambassador to Rome); and Napoleon and his second wife, Empress Maria Louise, who became Parma's beloved duchess Maria Luigia. She will also talk about his extraordinary talent, his utter commitment to his work, and the glory of his printing legacy.
Valerie Lester is the author of Giambattista Bodoni: His Life and His World, the biography of Giambattista Bodoni (Godine, Spring 2014). She is also the author of Phiz, the Man Who Drew Dickens (Chatto & Windus, 2004), a biography of her great-great- grandfather, Hablot Knight Browne, Dickens's principal illustrator; and Fasten Your Seat Belts! History and Heroism in the Pan Am Cabin (Paladwr Press, 1995), which is a history of Pan American World Airways told from the point of view of its cabin crew. Her translation of Le Grand Meaulnes (The Magnificent Meaulnes) was published by Vintage Press in 2009.
