Bring Your Own Problem: A Scripting Workshop for Pros
with Frederik Berlaen and Andy Clymer

A discount is available to Typographics conference participants. A promotional discount code will be found on the PDF of qualifying conference tickets. Please apply the code to workshop registration.

In this one day workshop, participants have a unique opportunity to have their own RoboFont production and workflow problems solved by way of a live coding demonstration by Frederik Berlaen, with assistance by Andy Clymer. While Python programming knowledge is helpful for the workshop, it isn't required of the participants. But, abstract thinking is a must. Wondering how to make variable fonts? Problems with getting started with a project? Workflow feels like it needs optimizing? Wonder what you could really be doing with Python? Bring a problem!

About Frederik Berlaen

Frederik berlaen
Frederik Berlaen is a typedesigner with a love for programming and scripting. After studying graphical design at Sint-lucas in Ghent, where he got the passion for pure black & white type, he went to study typedesign at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Frederik Berlaen works under the name of TypeMyType providing font services, programming and teaching at Luca School of Arts Ghent and at ESAD in Amiens.

About Andy Clymer

Andy clymer
Andy Clymer is a typeface designer and developer at H&Co. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from San Diego State University and a Master of Design degree in type design from the Type & Media postgraduate course at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Art) in The Hague, Netherlands. While in The Hague, Andy was influenced heavily by the notion that type designers have had for centuries of building one’s own tools for the job — mechanical bits and pieces, historically, and now bits and pieces of software. This carries through into his role at H&Co where he contributes both to the design of retail and custom typefaces and to the software that helps produce them. Since joining H&Co in 2005, Andy has worked on Vitesse, Forza, Ideal Sans, and more recently, spearheaded Operator and Obsidian.
